Spring Opportunities for Writers – scripts, stories, novel competitions and submissions

Wow! So many opportunities for writers at the moment. Better get in there quick as some of them have deadlines in the next few days!

Note: some of these sites also have other opportunities for writing in other mediums. For example, I’ve only given the details for Bridport’s Short Story Competition here but they also have prizes for poetry, flash fiction and a novel award. If there are other opportunities, I’ve mentioned it next to the link.

BBC Script Room 11 – Comedy

What’s the beef? The BBC’s annual opportunity for unsolicited comedy scripts. Send a 30 min comedy script, writer biography (only a paragraph) of your writing experience, and an outline of further episodes in the series if relevant.

What’s the prize? Could lead to your script/series being commissioned with the BBC.

What’ll it cost me? Nothing.

Closing date:  Monday 4th April  2016 at 5pm.

Bristol Short Story Prize

What’s the beef?   Stories can be on any theme or subject and are welcome in any style including graphic, verse or genre-based (Crime, Science Fiction, Fantasy, Historical, Romance, Children’s etc..) No more than 4000 words.

What’s the prize? 1st prize-£1000, 2nd prize -£700, 3rd prize -£400. Each of the 17 remaining shortlisted writers will receive £100.

What’ll it cost me? £8 per story entry.

Closing date:  April 30th 2016 at midnight.

Bridport Short Story Prize

What’s the beef?  Annual short story competition, calling for stories of up to 5000 words.

What’s the prize? 1st £5,000, 2nd £1,000, 3rd £500 + Highly Commended 10 x £100

What’ll it cost me? £10 per story entry.

Closing date:  Tuesday 31st May 2016

Mslexia Children’s Novel Competition

What’s the beef? Open to unpublished women novelists (sorry guys), this competition welcomes books written for children (who are able to read for themselves) and young adults – in every genre imaginable. Submit the first 3,000 words of your completed children’s novel. (To qualify, your book must total at least 15,000 words)

What’s the prize? 1st Prize £5000 plus five finalists will receive an invitation to a special networking event with literary agents.

What’ll it cost me? £25 per novel

Closing date:  19th September 2016 (so ages yet!)

The Moth Short Story Prize

What’s the beef? Submit short stories of no more than 6000 words.

What’s the prize? 1st prize € 3000, 2nd prize Writer’s Retreat at Circle Of Misse, 3rd prize €1000.

What’ll it cost me? €12 per story entry.

Closing date:  30th June 2016

    One day I will enter a short story competition. The Moth entry maybe within reach. Who knows, I just might walk away with a prize.
